“We have to work hard and we have to have fun while doing it. I come from a different generation and time of martial arts training starting judo in 1977. Samurai discipline was the standard. Wrestling was the same way on the competitive level. I did learn a lot but I think you can have fun and have high standards and that what we do at 805… You only live once let’s make it fun. Here is something that I learned, judo and wrestling tend to be exclusive, while Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu tends to be inclusive. What does this mean? Well, wrestling and Judo are Olympic sports so the focus of the training is up or out. Take wrestling, if you are good in grade school then you wrestling in high school, if you are good in high school you move on the college wrestling, and then off towards the Olympics as an end goal. The wrestlers who aren’t good enough from a competition standpoint are then excluded – they are done and out of the sport of wrestling. This is very true of modern Judo also. Jiu Jitsu is the exact opposite in my experience. Most people who are involved in Jiu Jitsu don’t even compete. They just come to train for workout and camaraderie and know they are getting practical and realist self-defense training in the processes. In fact, I have seen so many underachievers become really solid Jiu Jitsu practitioner – I've lost count. They do Jiu Jitsu for the fun of it and it became there philosophy for life and their lifestyle! This true for me as well! I'm fond of saying “Wrestling and Judo take exclusive approaches, …but Jiu Jitsu is inclusive – give us anyone and in five years they will be really solid at Jiu Jitsu in the they put the time on the mat. Notice it not up are out, it on the student to put the work in – just like real life! Accountability! The 805 is based on hard work – that is in a fun and friendly environment- and the 805 Way is for sure inclusive”.
