PROFESSOR MARK MIRELES
3rd Degree JJ Machado Black Belt
Big Mark is the personal student and black belt under the legendary coral belt Jean Jacques Machado. He has been a student competitor and instructor totaling 20 years in the Machado Brazilian Jiu Jitsu system. He is currently a third-degree black belt and the headmaster of Jean Jacques Machado Jiu Jitsu Simi Valley. In 2019, Big Mark was one of the rare members of the Machado competition team to culminate a lifetime of training and competition into an IBJJF World No GI Championship in the black belt master’s division.
Big Mark began his martial arts journey in 1977, first studying Judo and soon wrestling. He was subsequently awarded a black belt in Judo and earned All-American honors in NCAA Club Judo. As a distinguished wrestler, he earned All-American honors in Olympic style Greco Roman Wrestling. After retiring from elite level wrestling, he continued to compete at the master’s level, he was a four-time World Police and Fire Games gold medalist and a National Champion at the Master’s level in freestyle and Greco Roman wrestling.
Big Mark is considered a top-level instructor. As a distinguished authority on wrestling and judo transitional positions, he has integrated these systems into the application of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. In addition to his martial arts training, Big Mark is an accomplished author who has written or collaborated on several book articles and other professional writings related to self-defense applications. Big Mark is known as a teacher that can naturally convey Jiu Jitsu techniques and concepts easily through language and demonstration to adults and children alike. In addition to holding a master’s degree, he has state certifications in teaching theory, student development, curriculum design, and lesson delivery.
Big Mark believes that Jiu Jitsu training is training for real life. He followed this practice of using a martial arts platform to serve the community. Big Mark enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and served in the infantry and subsequently received an Honorable Discharge. He then turned his attention to local public service. For three decades Big Mark served on the Los Angeles Department as a uniformed police officer working in some of the Cities most challenging assignments and localities.
Since the founding of the City of Los Angeles in 1869, Big Mark is the only three-time recipient of the LAPD’s Medal of Valor, the highest award for personal bravery bestowed to its police officers. He was noted for saving human life on six total occasions and was also awarded the LAPD’s Police Star and the Life Saving Medal. In his police career, he received over 500 commendations from citizens, business, government officials, and civic organizations. When he retired from police work, he stated that no other professional career could compare to serving and protecting people, many of whom could not protect themselves. He credited martial arts training to develop his protector’s ethic, which was central in his ability for public service.
In a lifetime of serving and protecting, Big Mark was awarded the First Responder Award. He was awarded the California Public Safety Medal of Valor, which was presented to him at the state Capitol by then-Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, for a dangerous rescue of a suicidal person. He was also awarded the Carnegie Hero Medal, which is an international award, recognizing heroic valor in extremely dire situations.
Today, Big Mark continues to serve the local Simi Valley community in teaching Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Big Mark believes there are many benefits to learning and practicing Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, including physical education, practical self-defense, problem-solving, and building comradery among piers. Every time students enter the training facility; they will be faced with situations that are microcosms of real life. The study of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is predicated on training and hard work and when used as a platform for real-world training, there are significant benefits.

As a life long martial artist and grappler, Bryce has studied under the legendary Master Jean Jacques Machado for more than 25 years. As a Defensive Tactics Instructor at Covered6, he has spent years focusing on Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu as a fighting art rather than a sport and carries that philosophy into his teaching. At Covered 6, Bryce is key team member in developing and honing Defensive Tactics, Arrest & Control Techniques & Active Shooter Defense.
Bryce believes that Jiu Jitsu training is training for real life and that the foundation of Jiu Jitsu is that you will get out of it exactly what you invest into it. This is one of the most profound lessons in our life's journey. Jiu Jitsu is an activity that you cannot purchase or buy in pursuit of mastery. Simply put, you must invest time and effort. We are all allotted the same 24 hrs a day in our 7 day week. Time management and personal effort are the key ingredients in an activity, and understanding that that cannot be obtained in instant gratification will be the key to your success on and off the mat.
This is the secret for how ordinary people become extraordinary people, and Bryce teaches this personal performance method on the platform of Machado Jiu Jitsu. This is what makes training in Jiu Jitsu a model for leading a successful life.
By using Jiu Jitsu as a platform, many of life’s lessons are presented on the mat. Bryce often stresses that there is no secret training method in Jiu Jitsu, it’s just a matter of hard work and perseverance. And that means showing up. It should also be noted that these are the same tools that are needed in real life to be successful - this is true in both kids and adults. Finally, Bryce believes that the medium of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu makes the activity of self-defense and personal growth fun when delivered on the platform of Jiu Jitsu.
Bryce lives in Ventura County with his wife and three daughters. He loves his community and is active in making sure places like 805 BJJ exist for our future generations and our current one. Bryce has a true passion for life, fitness, and personal development and understands the focus and commitment required to achieve one’s goals.
Additionally, Bryce is a CrossFit Coach (CF-LC1) and believes that a functional fitness focus is part of a necessary approach to being “Hard to Kill” and with this well-rounded athleticism, was a fierce competitor and In the early days of submission grappling.
